The Human Brain

The human brain is made up of nerve impulses that can travel as fast as 170 miles in an hour. Have you wondered how fast you can react with painful stimuli such as burns, sharp objects and inflamed skin? This is because nerve impulses help the brain; kidneys and heart function normally, sending appropriate signals at the speed of a high powered luxury sports car.

The human brain has the ability to function like a 20-watt lightbulb. It remains a mystery how our brain can generate great notion swiftly. Even when we sleep, our brain still generates the same amount of energy just like a miniature lightbulb.

The human brain can store large information as much as 50 times of a Wikipedia.

Or any other popular encyclopedia for that matter.  It has been mysterious for thousands of years that even scientist have yet to confirm how much the brain can store information. It is, however, a fact that the brain’s maximum capacity ranges from 3 to 1,000 tetrabytes. Amazingly, even the National Archives of Britain which contains thousands years of historical books can only take up to 70 terabytes, creating your brain’s storage capacity totally extraordinary.

The human brain needs at least 20% of the total oxygen in your system. The human brain weigh just like a one kilo of fruits. However, it requires more oxygen than any other body organs. The human brain is a very sensitive organ, it can automatically sense if there is not enough oxygen in the body. Therefore, you should breathe deeply keeping your brain healthy and other body cells full of oxygen.

The human brain is 10 times more active during nighttime. It’s a weird fact to know that during daytime, you can do things with full of energy, like going to school to study, going to the office to work or even perform complicated tasks and mathematical calculations right away compared to lying in bed and doing nothing during nighttime. But not knowing that it’s the opposite of what the reality is basically. When you turn off, the human brain turns on. Cool! Experts don’t yet know why this is. However, you should be thankful to your brain for working so hard just to give you pleasant dreams.

Experts say the more dreams you can recall, the higher your IQ is. While this may be true sometimes, don’t take it too serious if you cannot recall what your dreams are last night. Many individuals cannot recall their dreams and only for about 2-3 seconds in average hardly long enough to register.

Nerve cells continue to live throughout human life. For hundreds of years, doctors and experts consider that human brain and nerve cells couldn’t multiply and regenerate. Not like the other tissues in the body, nerve cells persist on multiplying throughout your life. This makes the brain more interesting to study especially those diseases that are associated with it.

Different neurons travel information at varying speed. Each neuron is different. Transmission of information differs from each other depending on the kind of neurons. They can travel as slow as 0.5 meters per second or as quick as 120 meter per second.

The human brain itself cannot sense painful stimuli. Even if the brain is known as the pain center sometimes, where it can sense an immediate cut on your finger, the brain itself lack pain receptors and cannot feel the pain. However, it doesn’t mean that your head can’t be injured. You can still experience throbbing headache as the brain is enclosed by nerve tissues and blood vessels containing pain reception.

The human brain is made up of 80% water. It is important to keep yourself hydrated always because doing so can prevent brain injury. Human brain contains soft, pinkish and jelly-like organs and not those hard, gray mass you’ve seen on TV. This is because it contains loads of blood and water, cushioning the brain against sudden injury.
